SPORTS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL INJURY CARE

An athlete who has suffered a concussion/brain injury or other sports injuries may face various challenges including continuous pain;

loss of mobility/agility/strength/range of motion; and psychological effects such as drop in self-esteem, depression, anxiety, mood swing, and fear of reinjury. They may also experience cognitive impairment and/or deterioration which includes weakened focus and concentration, memory, learning and retention, self-regulation, speech and language, information processing speed, reasoning, planning, and/or problem-solving speed and ability.

The high stress, intense pressure, and relentless training environment in which elite-athletes exist combined with incidents of bullying, abuse, and/or assault can also result in serious psychological injuries. Effects could include total burnout, trauma, severe depression, anxiety disorder, eating disorder, and in more severe cases, effects could include self-harm and suicidal ideations.

Both physical and psychological injuries can have a debilitating impact on an athlete's athletic progress and future as well as on their personal well-being. At the Effectus Performance Lab, we work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary partners where appropriate, to help the athlete recover from their injury, rebuild their performance capacity, and safely return to doing what they love best.
