PSYCHOLOGICAL INJURy
Athletes can face psychological injuries that are equally or more debilitating than physical ones. Psychological injury is considered a mental harm, suffering, damage, impairment, or dysfunction sustained by an athlete as a result of certain environment conditions or traumatic incidents such as harassment and bullying, physical/verbal/ sexual abuse, severe injury, humiliating loss, toxic coaching, and/or other traumatic incidents.

These incidents can deeply impact an athlete's mental well-being and their overall performance. Psychological injuries endured often lead to feelings of isolation, diminished self-esteem, loss of identity, anxiety, depression, burnout, trauma, and emotional instability. The effects can manifest in mood swings, chronic stress, and fear of failure or reinjury. The intense pressure to succeed, combined with negative experiences, can also result in more severe struggles such as eating disorders, self-harm and/or suicidal ideation.

These hidden injuries may not be visible, but they significantly hinder an athlete’s personal growth, mental health, and athletic potential. Our therapists work with the athlete as well as their family members, where appropriate, to help the athlete address both the mental and emotional difficulties they are facing, recover from their psychological injuries. and restore their wellbeing and wholeness. We also work with other medical and paramedical professionals where appropriate, to support the athlete’s recovery. Through expert care, athletes can regain their confidence, emotional resilience, and ultimately return to performing at their best, both on and off the field.

We can assess the type and extent of psychological injury sustained by the athlete, how the injury might impact the athlete’s mental fitness to continue playing, when they may return to playing, types of accommodations that may be needed to ease the athlete’s return to game as well as the treatment and support that the athlete may need to facilitate continued recovery, resiliency building, and performance restoration.
